Real Life Education in Second Life for people who are interested in the educational possibilities of Second Life.

Second Life Grad Student Colony

  • for support in research, dissertation writing and promoting collaboration among researchers/student researchers
  • limited to students pursuing advanced degrees

Second Life Researchers

  • To help ensure ethical treatment of subjects and to promote collaboration
  • Limited to academics pursuing IRB-authorized research projects covered under SL's Terms of Service and research ethics policy

Schome Educators

This group is for anyone interested in schome (not school - not home - schome - the education system for the Information Age. The schome community is actively involved in developing visions of what schome (our future education system) should be like. Schome will be a genuine lifelong learning system (cradle to grave). Unlike other attempts to think about future education systems schome is starting from first principles:

  • What do we want/need from our education system in the 21st Century? (NEED)
  • What would be the best way to achieve that given what we know about how people learn, social demographics, support mechanisms available, etc (and unconstrained by preconceptions of school/college/university/etc)? (VISION)
  • Having established the VISION of how to meet the NEED then how on earth do we get from where we are now to where our VISION shows we want to be? (IMPLEMENTATION)

This group is for anyone interested in joining in on activities on the Islands of jokaydia, a project and environment dedicated to supporting educators, artists and not-for-profit and social change organisations in Second Life.

NMC Teacher's Buzz

The NMC is offering a regularly scheduled, informal discussion session for practicing teachers using Second Life, or those just plain interested in the idea or process of using SL for a class. Sloodlers

Sloodle user group. Sloodle is a project which aims to bridge web-based and Second Life virtual learning environments. Moodle + SL = Sloodle.

Regional/National Groups

Rowdy Kentuckians -- A group for Kentucky librarians, library employees, information professionals, teachers, faculty and anyone associated with libraries, universities, and education to discuss and provide support to each other in new worlds like Second Life, and possibly other social software tools. Apply for membership at their website.


UK Educators

  • For UK based educational users and their collaborators. Non-UK users are welcome to join.


Virtual Pioneers

This group is committed to collaborating and learning about Social Studies through virtual environments. Meetings are bi-monthly with tours of historical sites and group discussions. The Lorefield Institute

This is a professional organisation, working independently, designed to cater for social and cultural interaction, particularly amongst European, American and Asian people. All are welcome.

The Institute is managed by Professional lecturers and academics from the RL whom have an interest in what this environment can offer, whilst giving up some spare time to assist others in learning.

The emphasis is in language exchange and learning.

Our most popular groups are :

  • Second Life College of Japanese,
  • Second Life College of English,
  • Second Life College of French.


We have other colleges, which are run by natives of the language involved and operated as simple exchange groups.

As this is a Language and Cultural Institute there are other activities, namely the debating and poem reading group,


  • "Epithet and Synonym" and "The Live Poets Society".
